EXCURSION DESCRIPTION

We will begin our tour with a comfortable drive to the archaeological site of Philippi, Built on the site of a former colony of Thasians, Philippi was re-established in 356BC by the Macedonian King Philip II.  It was expanded and reshaped by the Romans, and became a "small Rome" in the decades following the Battle of Philippi.  This former walled city sits at the base of its own acropolis, and lies on the ancient trade route linking Asia and Europe.

According to the New Testament, the Apostle Paul visited the city around 49 or 50 AD.  The Apostle Paul is considered to be the first missionary to travel to Europe when he arrived at Neapolis. On his second and third missionary journeys, Paul founded the first Christian Church in Europe.  The city eventually became a metropolis of Christianity.  The early Christian ruins include two large basilicas and the unique octagonal church, built between the 4th and 6th centuries AD.

The historic site includes characteristic monuments from the Hellenistic, Roman, and early Christian periods.  Within the site, you will find a tower dating back to the Byzantine Period, a 4th century BC theater, the agora, and more.  The Archaeological Site of Philippi was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in July 2016.

We fell in love with Brian within the first 20 seconds. His excursions were well planned extremely well executed, even when monkey wrenches were thrown into the mix. Brian is professional, funny and full of energy that is just infectious! My suggestion book with him book early because the word is out that he is the bomb!! That is, as long as you’re not taking a seat away from me!

As novice international travelers, booking excursions with Brian Travels was one of the best decisions my husband and I made. Brian took the time to meet with us, and answer questions we had before we ever left home. We felt confident and secure in knowing that his tours would be intimate, fun and cover a lot of what we wanted to see. If you are looking for a great adventure with great people, do not hesitate to book with Brian Travels.
